President Trump will hold a rally for two competing Republican candidates for Louisiana governor Friday in Lake Charles.
Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) is running for reelection in the November 2019 gubernatorial election. Under the state’s jungle primary system, a runoff will be triggered if no candidate achieves a simple majority in Saturday’s primary election.
Trump has refused to take a side between competing Republicans Ralph Abraham and Eddie Rispone amid fears that the two may split the vote and deliver Edwards a second term.
Last week, Trump tweeted “REPUBLICANS of Louisiana, it is really important for you to go out and vote on October 12th for either Eddie Rispone or Ralph Abraham (both Great), which will lead to a runoff against a Nancy Pelosi/Chuck Schumer Democrat (John Bel Edwards), who does nothing but stymie all of the things we are doing to Make America Great Again.”
